By nature yellow is a signal color. Venomous animals take advantage of this effect and combine yellow with black. The contrast of yellow and black warns enemies of the poison and indicates that the animal is not suitable as prey.

The same signaling effect is used in the human world. Some examples are:

-Warning signs indicating danger

-Pillars and other obstacles on roads and ski slopes

-Bollards in ports and harbors

-Handles and bars in public busses and trains

-Handles of machines, tools, and rescue equipment

-Steps of escalators are marked in yellow for better visibility of the edges

-Wheel chocks of busses and trucks

-Ladders, climbing rungs, and rescue shelters of platforms and docks
