The shaft works in the same way as a chimney. In the event of a fire, the same happens with smoke and toxic fumes. Once in the elevator shaft, toxic fumes inevitably enter the elevator resulting in the danger of suffocation. Toxic fumes pose the most immediate threat to life. Inhaled they cause poisoning, leading to unconsciousness which is followed by death by asphyxiation. Also, in case of fire, there is always the risk of a power failure. One could easily get trapped inside the elevator. To prevent such accidents, modern elevators automatically shut down in the event of a fire alarm. They immediately come to a stop at the next floor and stay there with open doors. Since not all elevators are equipped with this safety system, there is a general rule. In case of fire, one must not use an elevator, even if it is still working!
