The Water Rescue Service takes measures to rescue humans or animals afloat on the surface of a body of water. Typical emergency situations arise in connection with accidents of bathing people, boat accidents, and accidents on frozen waters. In Germany, the water rescue is handled by aid organizations. Lifeguards secure the shores of rivers, inland waters, and the beaches of the North and Baltic Seas. Nevertheless, 410 people drowned in Germany alone in 2011. About 90 percent of the accidents occur in inland waters. Many rivers, lakes and gravel pits are not under surveillance.

水上救助隊は水浴事故、ボート事故、氷の事故での人命及び動物の救助を行います。ドイツでは水域での事故救助は救護組織が行っています。川、内陸水域、北海やバルト海の海水浴場等での救助は水泳救護者の担当となります。水泳救護者の活躍にもかかわらず2011年にはドイツで410人の人が水死しました。この90％以上は内陸の水域で起こった事故です。多くの川や湖、池などにはこのような水泳救護隊がついていません。
