Here are some basic rules which should be followed when being caught in a current. They could safe your life!

- Don´t panic but keep calm!

- Don´t fight the current! This means don´t swim directly against it. Swimming against a current will lead to exhaustion, the main reason for drowning accidents.

- Swim parallel to the shoreline and out of the current. Once out of the current, swim at an angle towards shore or ride waves.

- In case you can´t escape the current stay calm and wait. The current will loose strength at some point.

- Float or tread water to save energy.

- Call and wave for help. Try again to escape the current.
