Here is a link to a short video explaining the dangers of breaking into the ice and what measures to take to survive. When falling into cold water your body will react instantly. You will gasp and start to hyperventilate. This reaction is called cold shock phenomenon and will last for one to three minutes. If your head goes under water during gasping you are likely to drown.

It is important to know that this initial reaction will go away after a couple of minutes. Keep your head out of the water, catch your breath and don´t panic. Once you have your breath under control, look for the best escape route. Start kicking your feet as you try to pull yourself out of the water. Remember to not stand on the ice but roll away from the point of breaking in. Once you got away from the whole you might want to crawl, but don´t stand up.
