In Europe, Zippo Lighters are treated as hazardous material and are not to be taken into the cabin when boarding a plane. They will be confiscated. I don´t know about the US and Japan but in Germany I saw several people having their Zippo Lighters being taken away. If you manage to negotiate well and are lucky, you might get to keep the container (only the part holding the gasoline will be taken away).

You might want to put your Zippo Lighter in your main luggage or leave it at home while travelling by plane.
