母親からもらった免疫が低下する生後2ヶ月以降にかかりやすい感染症のこと。命にかかわるような重症化するケースも多い。

日本では予防接種として肺炎球菌ワクチン、Hibワクチンの接種が可能である。

特に肺炎球菌については、日本では2010年2月から接種可能となった。アメリカでは2000年から接種可能となっていた。
※日本は先進医療に対する認可が遅い。

Eine Meningitis ist eine potenziell lebensbedrohliche Infektionskrankheit. Sie kann ab zwei Monate nach der Geburt auftreten und sowohl durch Viren, Bakterien, Pilze oder Parasiten verursacht werden. Zur Prävention werden in Japan die Pneumokokken-Impfung sowie die Impfung gegen Haemophilus influenzae Typ B (Hib) durchgeführt. Die Pneumokokken-Impfung steht in Japan seit Februar 2010, in den USA hingegen bereits seit dem Jahr 2000 zur Verfügung.
