Die Unterstützung (Support) von Windows XP und Office2003 läuft aus.

Was bedeutet “Ende der Unterstützung”?
Die Unterstützung von Betriebssystemen und Programmen ist seitens Microsoft auf 10 Jahre begrenzt. Mit anderen Worten ist Microsoft 10 Jahre ab Verkaufsstart darum bemüht, für eine reibungslose Funktion von Programmen zu sorgen. Dies beinhaltet nicht nur die Behebung von Fehlern (sogenannten Bugs) sondern auch die Abwehr von Viren. Nach Ablauf von 10 Jahren werden diese Bemühungen eingestellt.

Ursprünglich war das Ende der Unterstützung von XP für 2009 vorgesehen. Wegen der weiten Verbreitung von XP wurde der Unterstützungszeitraum bis 2014 verlängert. Windows XP wird schon seit über 12 Jahren unterstützt und ist weiterhin weit verbreitet.

Was passiert bei Beendigung der Unterstützung?
Der Rechner wie gehabt genutzt werden. Allerdings besteht die Möglichkeit, dass einzelne Funktionen ausfallen. Automatische “Windows Updates” werden nicht mehr geladen. Es steigt die Gefahr der Infizierung mit Viren und anderen Schadprogrammen die von Hackern zum Stehlen von Daten genutzt werden können. Viele Anwender schützen sich mit Hilfe von Sicherheitsprogrammen gegen derartige Gefahren. Allerdings gehen diese stets von der Annahme aus, dass das Betriebssystem einwandfrei funktioniert und über keine Schwachstellen verfügt.

Eine Infizierung mit Schadprogrammen oder der Verlust von Daten kann auch Drittpersonen betreffen. Dies passiert wenn sensible Unternehmensdaten oder Kontaktadressen in falsche Hände gelangen. Weiterhin können Rechner auch manipuliert und für Angriffe auf Drittpersonen und Straftaten missbraucht werden. Ein stets fehlerfrei operierendes Betriebssystem ist daher aus vielerlei Hinsicht ratsam. Ich rate daher zu einer raschen Erneuerung veralteter Betriebssysteme.

What does “End of Support” mean?
Microsoft is limiting the support of operating systems (OS) and programs to 10 years. In other words, Microsoft endeavours to ensure smooth operation of its programs for 10 years from the launch. This not only includes the correction of errors (Bugs) but also defending against viruses and malware. After a period of 10 years, such efforts are stopped making programs and OS vulnerable.

Originally, the end of supporting Windows XP was scheduled for 2009. Owing to the prevalence of XP and due to the introduction of operating systems such as Windows Vista, 7, and 8 the supporting period was extended until 2014. Windows XP is being supported for more than 12 years now and the operating system continues to be widespread.

What happens at the end of the support period?
The computer can still be used once the support period has ended. However, there is the possibility of system failures of individual functions. The lack of automated “Windows Updates” increases the vulnerability of the system. Hackers might have less difficulty in spreading viruses or installing malware which may be used to gain access to data. Many people use security programs for protection against such attacks. Security programs always operate on the assumption of a properly maintained and functioning OS.

Furthermore, one should be aware that attacks of viruses and malware might also affect third parties. This is for example the case when control over sensitive company information or contact data such as e-mail addresses or telephone numbers is lost. Also, computers with installed malware can be misused for launching attacks or committing crimes. It is advisable to always maintain an error-free OS. I advise to regularly install updates and to replace outdated operating systems.
