Kürzlich ereignete sich ein Unfall, bei dem ein Auto in eine Gruppe von Schulkindern fuhr. Seither frage ich mich ob es sinnvoll ist, dass Kinder in Gruppen zur Schule gehen.

Offensichtlich wird das Bilden von Gruppen während des Schulwegs von immer mehr Schulen abgeschafft. In Gruppen sinkt die Aufmerksamkeit der Kinder gegenüber dem Verkehrsgeschehen, so die Begründung der entsprechenden Schulen.

Auf der anderen Seite bietet das Bilden von Gruppen Schutz vor Entführungen und Missbrauchsfällen. Eine Gruppe von Kindern wird von Verkehrsteilnehmern weniger schnell übersehen als ein einzelnes Kind. Kommt es jedoch -wie kürzlich geschehen- zu einem Unfall mit einer Gruppe von Schulkindern, resultiert es in einer Katastrophe.

Recently, there occurred an accident in which a car hit a group of children on their way to school. Since then I wonder whether it is safer for children to go to school in a group or on their own.

As a result of the accident, some schools have stopped the formation of groups. They argue that children pay less attention to traffic when going to school in a group.

On the other hand, forming groups to some degree offers protection from abduction and abuse by strangers. Also, a group of children is less probable to be overlooked than a single child. If however, a group of children is involved in an accident, this results in a disaster.
