Two cars collide and immediately explode. Everybody knows this kind of scenes from movies and tv series. The reality is much different.
In 2002, experts of the Allianz Technical Research Center conducted experiments to demonstrate what really happens when a car catches fire. During the experiment, instruments to measure carbon monoxide and oxygen levels were placed inside the car.

Here is the result:

It takes four minutes for a fire to spread from the engine compartment to the passenger compartment.

One minute later, the compartment fills with smoke.

Another minute later, flames start to develop in the passenger compartment. Initially, seats and the steering wheel are not affected.

If your car should catch fire there will be enough time to rescue passengers and to unload valuables. Smoke poisoning will not occur immedialtely and the car will not explode.

火災が起こるといったい車はどうなるのか、又、自家用車は映画のようにあんなに簡単に爆発するのかを2002年にアリアンツの技術センターが検証しました。この検証では車内に計測器を設置し一酸化炭素と酸素の測定をしました。

その結果：

エンジンルームから火災が起こると乗車席の方へ点火していくのに4分間かかります。その1分後には、車内が煙にまかれます。さらに1分後に車内に炎があがりました。この時にはハンドルや座席はまだ燃えておりません。あなたの車に火災が起こったとしたら、煙での中毒症になる前に自分や同乗者を避難させ、貴重品等を取り出す時間は十分にあります。
