It happened the other day on the highway. While being stuck in a traffic jam smoke started to come out from a car in front of me. A fire had started in the engine compartment of the car. The lady who was driving the car was in stress and didn´t know what to do. Unlike some other European countries, in Germany it is not mandatory by law to carry a fire extinguisher in the car. Fortunately a passerby had a portable fire extinguisher in the trunk of his car. Extinguishing the fire proved to be a difficult task. The source of the fire was far down in the engine compartment and the fire would flare up again and again. Overall, three portable fire extinguishers each containing 1kg of extinguishing powder and 1.5 liters of water were needed to put out the fire. Having experienced this, I believe that it would be a good idea to make carrying a fire extinguisher on each car mandatory by law. Car producers could set a good example and equip their models with fire extinguishers. The fire extinguishers should contain at least 2 kg of extinguishing agent.

最近のことです。高速で渋滞に会っていました。突然2台前方の乗用車から煙が出ているのが見えました。エンジンルームから燃え出したようです。女性のドライバーさんはこの状況に驚き何をすればいいのかわからないようでした。ヨーロッパの数カ国は乗用車に消火器掲載を義務付けていますが、ドイツではこの義務はありません。幸いなことに他のドライバーさんがトランクに消火器を掲載しておりました。しかし消火は簡単ではありませんでした。火元はモーターエンジンの下部で消化剤が届きにくく、炎が繰り返し発生しました。結局消火粉末が1キログラムはいっている消火器を3本使い、さらに炎を消火するため1.5リットルほどの水をかけて何とか消火に成功しました。この経験から消火器の乗用車掲載義務の必要性を感じます。車産業は模範を示してほしいものです。消火器は2キログラムのものが適当のようです。
