Although not all species are venomous some produce extremely strong venom. Stings of venomous species are usually very painful and can cause shock, breathing difficulty, and result in death in the worst case. Box jellyfish can be found in waters as shallow as 50 cm. Avoid touching and contact. First aid for box jellyfish stings: 1. When stung, get out of the water right away. Do NOT rub the affected area. 2. Pour plenty of vinegar on the affected area. Vinegar is only effective for box jellyfish stings. Do not use it for stings of other jellyfish species. 3. Any remaining tentacles should be gently removed. 4. Apply ice or cold water to ease pain. Seek medical advice. In case the victim stops breathing, immediately perform artificial respiration and heart massage.
