Arrive early and set up camp before dark.

Hiking and traveling in darkness is dangerous and has resulted in many accidents. You should hike in daylight and plan to arrive at your campsite with enough time to set up camp during daylight. Plan about two hour´s daylight to set up camp and inspect the surrounding area.

The camp site should be dry and level. Avoid areas which could be flooded or get muddy when it rains. Trees can protect your camp from strong winds but may also pose a potential hazard due to falling branches or trees. Do not set up camp near cliffs, drops, close to rivers, or in dried out river beds.

Inspect the surrounding terrain during daylight and inspect the site for potential hazards such as rocks, sharp objects, nests of ants, bees, wasps, or hornets, etc. Inform others of any potential hazards.
